Yahoo: The Media Habit Necromancers

The good news: Yahoo just realized that a personalization portal producing and pushing an online video show about online video is pretty damn pointless. They’ve ceased production of their Web clip show The 9.
The bad news: Yahoo still doesn’t realize that they’re a personalization portal, not a production house. They’re cooking up a watercooler news show, Good Morning Yahoo. While the Internet kills the cultural homogenization of the watercooler gang, Yahoo wants to bring it back.
You will recall that when the Internet started killing the need for top-down information heirarchies, Yahoo’s first act as a directory was to bring it back. While online video kills the commercial need to focus on longform video, Yahoo tries to bring it back. While contextual advertising kills the economic need to bundle content production and monetization, Yahoo tries to bring it back. Through the years, Yahoo seems determined to bring back any offline media habit that doesn’t work in online media. They’re media habit necromancers.
