Web Events of 2005: MSN goes LIVE
Late in 2005, Microsoft realized that their butts were being handed to them in the realm of web services. Microsoft had continually promoted their Operating System and Office products and really neglected the concept of applications being centered around the web. While Google and Yahoo continued to build upon a web platform, Microsoft kept building on a Windows platform. They realized they were going to lose the game to Yahoo and Google and chose to release the Live services.
Live itself is merely a portal but Microsoft has retooled their MSN services (or are in the process of doing so) to leverage themselves and try to convince someone that they aren’t out of the game. Rumor has it that Hotmail will become Windows Live Mail and MSN Messenger will become Windows Live Messenger.
And then there are the Microsoft Gadgets which strike me an awful lot like Yahoo’s Widgets.
