New NBC Chief Slams YouTube

by Mike Abundo on March 2nd, 2007

First day on the job, and he’s already being an idiot.

Jeff Zucker, on his first day as chief executive of NBC Universal, came out swinging at YouTube, accusing the online video site of failing to deploy its technology to protect the copyrighted materials of traditional media companies.

“YouTube needs to prove that it will implement its filtering technology across its online platform. It’s proven it can do it when it wants to,” Mr Zucker said, referring to the site’s controls to block pornography and hate speech.

Nonsense. Porn is loud, hate speech is fanatical. The line between infringement and fair use is not so obvious, as evidenced by many of Viacom’s YouTube victims.

“The issue is, how do we get that great content in front of new eyeballs, on new platforms, with new money attached?”

Ah, the old mass media paradigm of milking passive eyeballs for money using manufactured content on proprietary platforms. Classic.

In the TV content vacuum left by the Viacom pulldown, NBC’s YouTube channel was perfectly positioned to take over and make money in the coming revenue share. Too bad some moron just took the helm.
