MySpace Part Deux

by on February 27th, 2006

Here is part two of my ongoing gripe with MySpace.

Back in the old days (like, 7 years ago), all the frenzy was AOL chat - picking up girls, guys going into lesbian chat rooms pretending to be women, etc. Not that *I* did any of these things. I just know people who have. ;-)

Now it’s MySpace, and despite the claims of those who defend the site, it really is nothing but a sex ring. Perhaps not intentionally but I’ve spoken to folks who recently who regularly go to MySpace for a booty call… and you know what? They get it.

Free sex. Cheap sex. Imagined sex. It doesn’t matter. Ask Brian Woodman, a 32 year old married husband who arranged to have sex with a 14 year old girl who just so happened carried a gun and a badge.

I would not think of accusing my friend Tom (I know he’s my friend because he’s in my friend list on MySpace) of setting up the site with the intention of luring unsuspecting adolescent girls into the arms of a predator. But I have to ask… is all this warm fuzziness that gives kids wanting a place to belong or a group to belong to really that healthy?

Whatever happened to kids in the neighborhood? I’m dating myself here, but that’s what *I* had. After school, I went and hung out with the neighborhood kids, and yes… I got in trouble, but never did anyone in my family, or group of friends have a problem with sexual predators finding a wide open hunting ground with very little in their way.

Finally someone else who thinks that it is a sex ring!!!!! I’ve thought that about it for a while and no one else saw my point of view. I like to think that I am pretty easy going, but I swear there is some soft porn going on there.

It’s not just you. I don’t think it’s exclusively one but hey, thats why Brian Woodman got busted.

[…] I’ve said alot about MySpace recently and with good reason. It claims to have the largest membership of any other site on the internet with the exception of, I believe, Engadget. Hell, I couldn’t even go see a movie the other night without seeing a girl run up to another girl who was apparently a long lost friend and exclaiming, “So weird to see you here, I just commented on your picture today,” an obvious reference to MySpace’s photo/comment system. It is without a doubt the hottest thing among teens today – well, arguably anyway. […]

I actually do. It’s a little known fact that this white man has a Black Planet account. ;)
