Firefox 3 Download Day Delayed

by Mike Abundo on June 17th, 2008

Firefox 3 Download Day brought down all Firefox 3 download sites within the first few minutes. Mozilla’s still shooting for the Guinness Book of World Records for the most downloads of a software package in 24 hours, but their timeframe is suddenly uncertain:

The outpouring of interest and enthusiasm around Firefox 3 has been overwhelming (literally!). Our servers are currently feeling the burn and should be back to normal shortly. Download day will officially commence once the site goes live. The 24 hours period will be clocked from that moment. Thanks for your continued support.

I stayed awake for this? Geez. You’d think that with so much access to the data center geniuses at Google, Mozilla could have borrowed somebody to prevent this ahead of time. Hell, simply seeding a torrent could have eased their load a bit.

I’m still getting Firefox 3, but I don’t know if I can help with their record attempt anymore. Mozilla has to understand that Firefox can no longer be treated like some hobbyist project. As the events of the last three hours have shown, it’s kind of a big deal.
