iTunes 7 Can’t Burn CD’s

by Jason on October 18th, 2006

Were you aware that you can’t burn CD’s with the latest version of iTunes? That seems to be the case and is confirmed by Jason Powell on his blog.

Update: I originally left out the specific detail of this issue. Unless you have admin rights to your PC, you’re not able to burn CD’s using the new version of iTunes.

I really like his suggestion for a cause behind it all too.

Of course in this case one has to wonder if there isn’t a hidden motive … now that most everyone loves iTunes why not make the PC version of iTunes sucky and thereby perhaps get more people to buy a mac?? Things that make ya go hmmmmmmmmm

I think it’s pretty narrow minded to think that Microsoft is the only evil technology company in the world don’t you think?

I seem to be able to…

Aaron thank you for pointing out that I omitted one important part of my post. It seems you can only burn a CD in iTunes if your Windows account has admin rights. I’ll update the post immediately.

Ask your administrator to change your software permissions in regedt32 and you’ll be able to burn from iTunes.

Hi everyone…Itunes will NOT let me burn a CD. I was having trouble BEFORE I downloaded the new Itunes 7, and after I downloaded that, I still can’t. Does anyone have any advice? I was able to burn a CD until today.

Jean, are you sure you have Admin rights to your computer as I mentioned in the post? Are you trying to burn copy-protected files?

  • Jean
    Dec 8, 2006 at 4:54 pm

Hi…no to all. I AM the Admin. and I have burned many many Cd’s in the past. In fact…it did burn the first one onto a CDR early this morning…then I went to do it again, the same songs for a friend, and that’s when I get the error. First it appears like it’s going to burn..I get the ‘noise’ and all. Then all of a sudden I get an error in the Itunes window ‘canceling disc burn, this might take a minute or two’. Then, and error message pops up in them iddle of the screen saying ,” The attempt to burn a disc failed. Unknown error 4310″ I have also gotten the same message but with error message # 4280! What the heck? The one I burned this morning was with a CD-R. I have even tried to burn onti a CD-RW, and I get the same thing. I just don’t get it…just out of the blue it won’t work, but got one to burn this morning.

So what’s the solution to this problem. And if getting permission from the admin is the answer, then how in the heck do you do that? I am the admin i thought. This problem sux, i’ve already wasted 10 blank CD’s trying different things to solve this. I’m getting the same thing. I emailed itunes support and they sent me some stupid link to solutions that aren’t for my problem. what gives? Help!

My iTunes was looking at a jump drive instead of a cd drive. To fix, go to edit, Advance option, burning, and select your correct cd_rw….

well, I don’t have a freaking clue about computers, but apparently changing the burning speed seems to be working. I took it down just a notch and now it’s burning one. but I do believe it would suck if Mr. iTunes did that on purpose. We should go up to his house with lit torches and pitchforks and blank Cds.

exactly the same problem here. could previously burn cd’s no problem, now it cancels with unknown error. i’ve tried lowering the speed and updating the latest itunes version to no avail. wasted 5 CD’s. cannot believe Itunes support hasn’t got a phone number or email address. last time i get an apple product.

update on my burning problem. picked up bits of advice from here + there and tried the following: 1) reduded burning speed to x2
    2) turned off firewall
    3) shut down all other programs
    4) deleted songs off playlist that were bought from Itunes store
and it worked first time! I don’t know which of the above made the vital difference, but try it if you haven’t already.

  • robin
    Jun 27, 2007 at 5:08 pm

I don’t think you have to reduce the speed so drastically. Just reduce it a notch and it should work.

  • chris
    Jun 27, 2007 at 10:38 pm

I tried to reduce the writing speed, turning firewall off…everything. It still gives me the same “Disc burner or software not found…” iTunes used to be wonderful…now its acting like something Microsoft put out :-P

This seems to be a problem for a lot of people. although i dont know if its only people who arent admins i dont think anyone can. My laptop, which has itunes 7 (and no internet connection) was burning fine until one day i turned it on and i got that error message about not finding drive or whatever. Then, the next day my desktop also started doing it. and no one can figure out what to do. if apple doesnt help soon i will be very angry! grr! rawr!

Here is a strange one. I am running the latest iTunes with Vista 64 bit. I have had no problems burning until recently. I am not sure which iTunes update it was that crashed it. I have my account setup as administrator on Vista. But we all no that with the new Vista, no one really has administrative rights. Anyways, I put in a blank cd and iTunes informs me that I have put in a blank cd and if I want to burn a cd, I have to create or select a playlist and select burn. Noticed that iTunes did recognize that I put in a blank cd. Because when I click to burn a playlist, I get a message that cd burner or burner software is not detected. I then go into the advance preference under burner and it shows that there are no cd burners. I thought iTunes came with its own burner software, as lame as it might be. I can still burn using Vista’s or as I prefer, using Nero. I am starting to think that the problem is not related to just administrative rights. Does anyone know if iTunes has a fix? Not a work around.
    Thanks

Don’t know if this will help.. I am running 64-bit Vista on an HP9000dv
    From the Apple support site:

Re: Can’t burn cd’s using iTunes 7.3 and 64-bit Windows Vista Ultimate
Posted: Jul 29, 2007 7:40 AM in response to: abazaldua Reply Email

iTunes doesn’t support 64 bit Windows.

However some people have had success from downloading and installing the 64 bit Gear drivers from here:
    http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.cfm

compaq presario iPod 20GB iTunes 7.3.1.3

  • bob
    Aug 18, 2007 at 11:31 pm

the problem is that itunes never forgets the first burner software you had at time of install…if you change it at all it will never burn another disc again…you need to due a complete clean uninstall of your burner software including registry stuff…problem is you’ll mess up your computer and all other programs..too much of a headache…simple solution= Forget itunes and their m4p’s go straight mp3 all the way

I finally gave into the evil mac and itunes to get Elements of life and haven’t been able to burn it on any media, media that Nero burns perfect with. I am the sole named admin, fresh windoze install. All new hardware-computer, dual core opteron, gig of OCZ platinum.

What a waste of money. Apple, you suck.

I just used Nero to burn my CD’s. I get the error message “Disc Burner or software not found”; as soon as I couldn’t use iTunes, after using it to burn CD’s countless times, I tried Nero and all is good.

I spent no less than three hours on hold with itunes addressing the same issue. I only spoke with reps for 15 minutes before they transfer me and then hang up on me. How can they not be aware of this error in the product. Is there some sort of legal action that I need to take?

Okay folks…. try this…. (I’m running iTunes 7 on a Windows XP machine.)
    1. Create a new playlist and add the tracks that you want to burn to CD.
    2. Right click on the playlist after it is created.
    3. Select ‘Burn Playlist to Disc’
I just burned a disc for my daughter and it worked like a charm. I googled ‘burn cd from itunes 7′ and went to this website for help. http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/3128
    Good luck.

Ok guys. I think I figured this out. I’m the only account on the computer, but for some reason iTunes didn’t read me as it. To fix this, right click iTunes -> Properties -> Security (tab) -> Highlight your account name (whatever you named your user name) -> Click Edit -> Click your name again -> Then click the box that says “Full Control”. Works for me… Hope it works for you guys!

When I first got I tunes it was not a problem to burn tracks onto disc, now I get the message saying ‘ disc burner or software not found’.
I was advised to then find the original folders of the tracks in my computer and try copying from there - that may work for some of you … or.. try dragging the tracks from the i tunes library into windows media library and copy from there. the only problem I found with that though is that some of the files were not copied into an mpeg format.. if anyone knows how to change the copied file into an mpeg then the tracks could easily be copied from windows.
Our tracks are like little prisoners stuck in the walls of the i tunes prison and are dying to be freed so that they can play their greatness to one and all via other means!!!!

I’ve had my iMac for a few months now and never bothered to burn any CDs until today and found out I couldn’t. I’m not getting any kind of error message, it’s just telling me to insert a blank disc….. And if I try to click the eject button, it doesn’t eject until I close itunes. :( itunes never used to be mean to me before! And I’m the only one that uses this computer, so I would imagine I have administrative rights by default.

I just went into iTunes and authorized my computer - (iMac running leopard) I’m now burning away with no problems. I would have sworn that my desktop had been authorized, but maybe not - anyway for the folks who keep gettting the “please insert blank disk” I think this is the fix. Thanks

ok, so i don’t know if i’m missing something or the newest (8) version of itunes is different. but i went to try bryan’s suggestion and i don’t have a security tab when i right click on itunes. i just have a general tab and a shortcut tab. any other way i can try this? i can’t burn a regular old cd in itunes currently. i am able to burn SOME songs as mp3s, but not all of them. it’s frustrating and even more so because apple will NOT take responsibility for this glitch.

Confused!?! I have itunes version 7 on my PC I have always been able to burn CD’s from itunes and now it starts to burn and then cancels the burn stating that there was an unexpected error (4850) and ruins the disc. This is very frustrating since I purchased the music and just want a copy for my car. I am trying to burn new songs that have not been burned before so they haven’t reached the max number of burns. But I am looking for suggestions because the itunes website is helpless!
